Meadows Varsity Soccer Team Makes the Play-Offs for the 1st Time in Over a Decade (by L. Wexler, posted 10/25/2008) The varsity soccer team guaranteed entry into the playoffs with a 2-0 victory against Virgin Valley (VV) on their home turf. After losing to VV 5-1 in a pre-season friendly game, Meadows pulled off an unexpected 3-0 win against VV just two weeks after the initial loss. Following an excellent first half of the season, the Mustangs found itself in the fourth playoff position. A string of excellent results, however, for VV left Meadows having to win its second meeting away to assure a playoff birth. The Mustangs played with skill and determination to pull of this victory!! After an early scare where goalkeeper Ofir B. '09 pulled off an excellent save on a one-on-one, the team settled down to control and dominate the first half. That scare came to be VV's only meaningful effort in the first half and the Mustangs employed its passing and movement game to repeatedly unlock the VV defense. Matthew S. '09 and Ashley L. '10 worked tirelessly to breakdown VV attacks and feed the strikers and wingers with quality passes. VV was saved on multiple occasions by good goalkeeping as Alex K. '11, Toby W. '11, Josh W. '11, and Matthew S. '09 all forced the goalkeeper into saves. The breakthrough finally came from a corner on 20 minutes, when Toby W. '11 precise cross was met forcefully by Alex K. '11 to head home from four yards. The remainder of the half played out the same with Meadows playing attractive and entertaining soccer to dominate the home side. Nathaniel S. '12 made a valuable contribution replacing Ajay B. '11 for the last 10 minutes of the first half. The Meadows expected VV to come out strong in the second half, but they surprised the home side by getting three shots on goal in the opening minutes. The Meadows continued to dominate, and Corin G. '12, on the right wing, continued his excellent first half performance providing width and good distribution to the forwards. The Mustangs continued to press, but the important second goal just would not come. During this period Gianfranco N. '10 put in an excellent shift in attack, creating problems for VV and winning some important free kicks. With 15 minutes to go, the tide of the game changed as the Mustangs tired and a little edginess crept into their game. VV scented their opportunity, but The Meadows back line with Tony C. '09, Michael W. '10, Cameron B. '11, and Ajay B. '11 all performed as a competent unit to prevent any meaningful chances on goal. The Meadows continued to look dangerous on the break, and VV did themselves no favors by conceding a string of free-kicks in the middle of their half. With three minutes to go, one of these free kicks from Matthew S. '09 was too hot for the goalkeeper to handle and Toby W. '11 was quickest to react to slot the ball home and send The Meadows into the soccer playoffs for the first time in over 10 years!!!! Way to go Meadows Soccer Team. We know you can take it all the way to a season's end victory!!! For soccer play-off schedules, go to the NIAA website.
